(London) On a recent trip to the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, London, I saw a great piece of art that involved a giant vibrating mirror. Taking the opportunity to experiment with the video function of my new DSLR, here’s a sample of the fun!
The video is not exactly fashion related, but if you’re interested, I’m wearing a pink merino sweater from Miss Selfridges, Silence + Noise Skirt from Urban Outfitters and over the knee boots from ASOS.
(London)APC is massive in London and I hate to admit this so publicly but I didn’t know much about the brand before I moved here even though it is decades old. This video I found on the Cool Hunting iPad app, which I highly recommend by the way, kind of gave me a brief history of the brand and its founder Jean Touitou.
(Toronto) Happy Friday everyone! Just to end the week with a little bit of nostalgia, I’d like to share a video of my hometown by Ruzannadiscovered via 1loveto.com. I’ve got Adele’s Hometown Glory playing in the background and feeling a bit homesick but the weekend is a’starting and I’ll be just fine. Enjoy the video!
(London) I promise I am not obsessed with Susie Bubble, just a big fan. I can’t help it that content created by her is far superior than other ‘famous’ bloggers, is original and genuinely interesting. Always quirky, Susie is just cool. I’ll reiterate, I’m a fan. Check out the video profile that Avant Garde Diaries did on her and photographer Saga Sig.
(New York) It is a digital age and we all know it, yet we can’t help by reach for those glossy print magazine at the news stand. Having an iPad (through work) I genuinely feel guilty paying for glossy mags. The cover of a magazine has to really stand out for me to dish out a few dollars or pounds to buy one. The last magazine that I bought was the GQ Mens Style Issue and for obvious reasons.
One that I will be adding to the rituPad (as I like to call it) is the new Marie Claire app. See a video that the Masthead at Marie Claire made to introduce the app a while back.
A list of the magazines I read on the iPad is below. Some are paid subscriptions but I generally just browse the free previews and free versions.
ASOS
V Mag
NYLON
Esquire
GQ (US + UK)
Elle
Glamour
Allure
Vogue
People
Valet
Style in Progress
The Cut (NY Mag)
Interview
My recommendations for the best iPad magazine apps are below.
(New York) I have been a fan of Rachel Roy’s for as long as I can remember. Well, at least for the past four years! I know everything about her like her background, her rise up the career ladder and eventual domination of fashion and retail. OK, fine, I’ll stop making sweeping statements, but the honest truth is that I admire the lady. Maybe it is because she is willing to share a bit of herself with the world via her well made, sometimes serious, sometimes funny and always creative videos, her site and Twitter. Maybe it is because I got the honor to meet her once and she said something very personal and sweet to me. Maybe it is because she is driven and has created a successful fashion company and retail brand from scratch!
I’ll stop gushing and get to the point. Rachel and team created this adorable Christmas video that I wanted to share in which Rachel attempts to cook for her team and disaster ensues. Watch what happens and get a candid tour of the RR HQ.
On another more sombre note, following up on her massive effort to Help Haiti after the earthquake last year, she is offering a collection Heart of Haiti jewelry, available on RachelRoy.com. These handcrafted pieces by Haitian artisans are each unique and proceeds from the line directly benefit the Haitian artisans who create them. Christmas present that is fashionable as well as charitable? Sign me up. This is going on my wish list.
(New York)Clostista.com, an online fashion TV network, that brought us the first Style Gone Social contest which we launched our Video channel with has just kicked off the anticipated second contest.
To celebrate their first anniversary and do something special for Cyber Monday, they will be live broadcasting features on new designers such as Jules Kim of Bijules, Elle Sakelis of Otrera, Alexandra Samit of Alexandra Beth Designs, and Nicla DiCosmo and Michel Bezoza of Gypsy Warrior. You can get involved by tweeting questions to the designers to @ClosetistaTV. To help the designers win, instead of a judging panel, you can vote through many social media channels for the designer of your fancy.
(New York) This week’s video features Sammy Davis, a dear friend and fellow blogger extraordinaire from New York. Sammy and I met about 2 years ago at the Independant Fashion Bloggers Conference and her neon pink leggings and gorgeous vintage black and white suede jacket. You can read about her life in NYC here and our adventures here, here and here.
Sammy is a vintage expert, blogger, fashion personality and video producer and host of some great features she does on vintage fashion and thrift store style. Below is her latest video on plaid which might have inspired me to wear plaid to work today (maybe?).
My colleague Ian and me in the office today – both sporting plaid.
I’m wearing a plaid/flannel shirt from Uniqlo and Guess Jeans. Ian is wearing a plaid shirt from Stussy, bought in NYC.
(New York) I got into Who What Wear more than four years ago when I got my first video iPod. I wanted to watch video podcasts on the long subway ride from my apartment in Spanish Harlem to my office in Brooklyn and the more fashion stuff, the better! My favorite videos, hands down, were by Who What Wear and I still hold them highly all things fashion, celebrity and stylist related. A close second were the Ford models video podcasts.
Here’s one of the video by Who What Wear creators Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power. Watch and you will see why I became addicted!
(London) If you’ve been reading this blog lately, you know that I have recently moved to London from NYC. One of the reasons is so that I could travel all of Europe! I used to think I travelled in style when I was university and carried my fake coach duffel bag everywhere but I have graduated now, from university as well as from fakes. If I could afford it, I’d love to indulge in this new line of luggage by DVF. Check out this cute animated video, narrated by Queen (or is it dutchess?) Diane Von Fürstenberg.
