Backstage at Derek Lam

Posted on 26 April 2010 by Ritu

While reading the daily newsletter from WhoWhatWear this morning, something about this outfit seen on a model backstage at a Derek Lam fashion show jumped out at me as totally wearable but unique, both at the same time. Maybe it’s the perfect layering that the model has achieved, from the super casual long sleeved tee, with a short sleeved cardi and the extra long skinny belt or the mix of grey, shiny black and camel, or the so of the moment shiny tights and the classic chain strap Chanel purse. The entire look works and yet looks so effortless and comfortable.

The Perfect White Party Dress

Summer is almost here and with it our annual obsession with white dresses. My perfect white dress last summer was this beauty by DVF. This year a more constructed geometric white dress at Reiss has stolen my heart. I found this gorgeous white dress at the new Reiss boutique in SoHo a couple of weeks ago.

What is Reiss

The hottest ready to wear line from the UK has landed in NYC – Reiss. What you will find at Reiss is clothes that conbine the sensibility of New York and the elegance of London for work and play.

The menswear boasts craftmanship and tailoring to transform any man into a commanding and confident guy, zipped up tightly in elegance. The same must be said about Reiss’ womenswear. The construction will lend a certain executive quality to your look.

Reiss Foxy White Dress

The Reiss Foxy Dress is a dream and I instantly fell in love with it at first site. It reminded me of the white dress Blair wore in Gossip Girl to the Hamptons White Party. If you are lucky enough to get an invite to the party, this dress is an instant winner. Just make sure no one else is wearing it as well since I’m sure a lot of fashion forward ladies will have same idea.

With a price tag above $250, it is one of those investment pieces you’ll find yourself wearing summer after summer.

Give Vintage a Chance

Posted on 19 April 2010 by Ritu

What is Vintage fashion? Vintage means various things. It could be a conscious decision to be Green and recycle clothing – may it be giving yours away or buying used, it could be an insatiable thirst to hunt for amazing fashion from the past or just finding great deals of great clothes that pass the ultimate sartorial test of fabric, fit and construction which is not easy to come by. For me, it a bit of all the three things above.

One thing that you can be sure of about people who are vintage fans is that they are into it because they truly love it and not because it’s a passing trend or a fad. One of these vintage lovers is Sammy Davis. I got a chance to meet up with Sammy in her hood (read about Spanish Harlem here) a little while back and heard all about her love affair with vintage. Even as an editor at a top online magazine in NYC, she didn’t hesitate when her love of vintage beckoned her to take a leap of faith, leave the security of a day job behind and start her own vintage line: Sammy Davis Vintage.

The Sammy Davis Vintage line celebrated it’s first year anniversary last Sunday with an inspiring party-slash-charity-sale complete with endlessly flowing wine and pastries baked with love.  The highlight of the event was the fabulous clothing that was on sale and the fact that $200 of proceeds from the sale is going to Haiti to support a young girl’s education.

The event was a total success with influential fashion bloggers from in and around NYC stopping by  to support and shop! I couldn’t resist trying some vintage goodies on myself and succumbed to a gorgeous sexy cropped jacket that I had to bring home with me. Not only would I never be able to find something like this in stores today but definitely not at the price I got it for – a mere $20! The jacket fits like a glove, almost as if someone in their past life tailored it to a future vision of my body. This piece definitely passed my sartorial test of fit, fabric and construction. It is my little gem that I dug up and found within Sammy’s haystack of fine vintage treasures.

Rachel Rachel Roy – Scarves for Spring

Posted on 13 April 2010 by Ritu

I Love Rachel Roy!

I am a HUGE fan of Rachel Roy and my love for her grew by 500% after I met her at Fashion’s Night Out during NYFW Spring 2010 last year. The 30 minutes of waiting in drizzle just to get in through the door of her pop up store in SoHo, fighting the crowds and helplessly spending a ton of money on RRR accessories that I just couldn’t resist was all worth it for the 30 second conversation I had with Rachel that evening. She flew in and out, shaking hands, hugging and kissing her celebrity friends like Estelle, Iman and Knaan, who were all there to support her. I managed to grab her attention right as she was leaving and she graciously posed for this photo with me, smiling the whole time and asking what my background was – we are both from Bengali origin. Aaaand I was in love.

Rachel Rachel Roy Spring Collection – Scarves

My love for RR grows every time I see her new collections. Her vibrant color and bold patterns keeps me coming back for more. I have favorite pieces from the RRR Spring collection which I will highlight in a future post – this one is all about the scarves. As the owner of over a dozen scarves, I’m not picky. I love scarves. They are easy to bundle up and throw into your purse on a spring day when the weather can be unpredictable and the right scarf can lend a whole lot of attitude to any outfit. The one from the RRR Spring collection that I loved most is the Ikat Wrap Scarf in Jade fabric. When looked at closely, the vibrant colors create a pattern that reminds me of a South Asian mixed with West African fabric.

My top three picks are (left to right) the Love and Peace Scarf, the Ikat Wrap Scarf and the Two Tone Fringe Scarf. See all of them here.

If you need inspiration on new ways to wear scarves, check out this video from the RRR Youtube channel.

The Perfect Summer Wedding Shoes by Chinese Laundry

Posted on 12 April 2010 by Ritu

I’m not a weddings expert or a bride-to-be, but I was instantly ready to say I Do to these gorgeous Chinese Laundry Wedding Head over Heels shoes. The platform is very of the moment, the lace is timeless and the ribbon and bow add a bit of a fashion statement.

Most brides decide to go with long ground skimming wedding gowns. These shoes are perfect for the walk down the aisle because when the bride will be gliding towards the alter, the ankle details will be hidden by the gown. Later on when it time to dance up a storm at the reception, the cute little bow and details will be visible as she picks up her dress to move around.

In addition to all the gorgeous details, the best part about these shoes is the price! They are only $99! You can also find affordable shoes to match for your bridesmaids within the collection.

Talking about these shoes are really making me want to get married so I’ll stop now and send you over to the rest of the Chinese Laundry Wedding collection. A big congratulations to all the brides of 2010!

Sex And The City – Are you on Team Aidan or Team Big?

Posted on 09 April 2010 by Ritu

After seeing this trailer, the whole Arabian theme in SATC 2 makes a little more sense. But it also re-introduces Aidan back into the picture and pits us in two opposing stances between him and Big. Now my question to you is, are you rooting for Team Aidan or Team Big? Let me know what you think in the comments section.

Although I’m currently on Team Big, I do have to admit that John Corbett is aging very very well.

To get an idea on the insane amount of clothing budget the movie had, check out this article on US Weekly.

Skullcandy Headphones – soon to hit the Streets of LES

Posted on 07 April 2010 by Ritu

While snowboarding in Vermont over the winter, I noticed two things: 1. boarding is more painful than it is fun and 2. headphones are almost as prominent on the hills as fancy snow gear. The snowbunnies and boarders in Vermont and upstate New York are already huge fans of Skullcandy – brightly coloured and old-school looking headphones. I saw these on young pro skiers and snowboarders all over the hills and in the lodge. While the girls sported hot pink and magenta Skullcadies, the guys had on neon greens and baby blues like the Aqua print one below.

The great sound quality and loud, look-at-me colours and styles of Skullcandy has already made them a hit up North and I predict that the music lovin’ skater crowd of the Lower East Side will pick up on them soon.

The Icon 2 Magenta Print
Price: $31.95

Icon 2 Aqua Print
Price: $31.95

Summer Sunglasses – Rayban Wayfarer Shields

Posted on 06 April 2010 by Ritu

Summer is right upon us and if you live in NYC, you’ve already gotten a taste of it over the last few days. With summer, comes the call to update our eyewear. I’ve been a devoted fan of Rayban Wayfarers since they made their comeback in 2008 and was jumping for joy when I discovered the latest version: Rayban Wayfarer Shields. A style savvy friend has been sporting these lately and so far she’s the only one in the city I’ve seen with the Shields on. Having picked them up form a recent trip to Aruba, she might have beaten the rest of the NYCity-slickers to it. These hot shades can be yours too for just $139 at Rayban.com.
